Assignment#9A

" The roar of approaching planes was heard about this time. Someone in the crowd near the Nakamura family shouted, " It's some Grummans coming to strafe us!". A baker named Nakashima stoop up and commanded, " Everyone who is wearing anything white, take it off." ( pg. 38)

I don't understand the part that Nakashima commanded. If the people who is wearing white they have to take it off.

I think that Nakashima as others were in the crowd and heard the shout, so he decided to confront the Grummans. White means peace, so maybe they preferred to fight and die with honor than run like chickens. That's why Nakashima told them to take all the white clothes off.

In this scene, people scare of attacking by bomb again when they hear the sound of planes. Nakashima also worries about second attacking and thinks that the white wearing anything would easily make the pilots’ attentions. Therefore, not to be a bombing target, Nakashima commands that people take white clothes off.
